Windmill Lodge Care Home in Brixton recently partnered with The Together Project to introduce weekly intergenerational activities to the care home’s calendar.

Intergenerational activities benefit both the people who live in a care home and the children who take part. For people living in a care home, intergenerational sessions provide them with the opportunity to play an active part in a child’s learning through the games and activities they take part in. For people who don’t have grandchildren or younger people in their families, intergenerational sessions provide people with a way to establish relationships with the younger generation and benefit from them.

For children, these sessions teach them valuable lessons in how to interact with other people and can also help to build their confidence. Children who don’t have grandparents usually take to these sessions well, as it provides them with an older person outside of their parents to look up to and learn from.

For all of these reasons, and because the people living at Windmill love the company of children, the team organised weekly visits from The Together Project. Their Mother and Baby group now hosts their sessions in the walls of Windmill Lodge Care Home, where they sing songs, play games, share stories, and build friendships.

So far, the weekly sessions have been very successful, and everyone has enjoyed the company of all different generations. The people living at Windmill Lodge have begun to establish relationships with the children and their parents, meaning the session is well-attended and enjoyed every week!
