The people living at Winifred Dell Care Home in Brentwood recently visited their local fire station in Thurrock to find out what it takes to be a firefighter!
Relatives and friends were invited to join their loved ones for this trip, so they could find out more about their local fire service and make memories together.
When the group arrived at the fire station, they were introduced to the firefighters on duty and enjoyed admiring the variety of shiny red fire engines. Some of the people living at Winifred Dell had questions about the fire engines, which were happily answered by the knowledgeable team.
Brenda’s daughter, Jackie was then nominated to put on a full firefighter outfit so she could experience what firefighters have to work in, and other guests could see how much equipment they have to wear. As Jackie put on each part of the outfit, the fire fighters explained why each part was important. The outfit consisted of boots, leggings, a tunic, a balaclava, a face mask, a helmet, and gloves.
When Brenda had all of the kit on, she said it was very heavy, and this was without the oxygen tank which adds about 20kg to the weight of the outfit. Brenda said it would be difficult to move quickly in this, which is why firemen have to train hard and under difficult circumstances. Brenda said it was also very hot inside, so being close to a fire would make it almost unbearable!
The group was then taken on a tour of the fire station so they could see the facilities and observe the infamous sliding pole that firefighters use during an emergency.
Everyone had a brilliant day at the Thurrock Fire Station and each said how interesting and enjoyable it had been.
The team would like to thank the men and women from Thurrock Fire Station for welcoming them and being so hospitable throughout the day.
